Chinese Culture Water Fountains

Today we'll talk about a little bit of Chinese Culture in comparison to the rest of the world and that is Water Fountains. Water fountains is something I never knew growing up in China, they simple do not exist there. It was something of a culture shock for me when I first visited Canada and saw them in the airport there. It took me a few minutes to realize that there was a public service that provided free drinking water to anyone who wanted to come up and use it. I really hope that someday China can provide a similar service as it is easy to get really thirsty there if you are walking around a lot and touring. ------------------------ Donate: http://bit.ly/Wg4FzD Website: http://bit.ly/Wg4F2N 5 Minute Chinese : S08E11 http://bit.ly/YIMKTE

Learning to Write Chinese - I (我) am Beautiful (美)!

Welcome back to our Character learning special series. Today we are going to teach you two new characters, and they are "I" - 我 and "Beautiful" - 美. And while these two might look complicated, with a little practice they can become easy to master. A good study tip for any character is to write it about 10 times every day for a few days to a week and by the end of the week you'll find that it starts to come more and more naturally. Keep in mind the Stroke Order as well, and refer to earlier episodes in the series in case you need a refresher! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Donate: http://bit.ly/Wg4FzD Website: http://bit.ly/Wg4F2N 5 Minute Chinese : Special 7 http://bit.ly/1sZS0KG

Everything else you wanted to know about "de" but were afraid to ask

In previous episodes (1, 2: below) we introduced you to the possession word "de" and how it works in that fashion. Today we will expand upon our knowledge of "de" with being the glue that brings adjectives and nouns together. Every time you see an Adjective, or an "adjective phrase", and a Noun, you must use "de". But if you only see an Adjective by itself then you do not use "de". Chinese Culture - Buying Eggs

There was a small culture shock when I first came to America many years ago. That was in the purchasing of Eggs. Eggs?! you might be saying right now. Yes, I know you might scratch your head on something as small like an Egg, but in China we don't buy eggs by the dozen, or by 18 or 24 count containers. We purchase eggs individually and pay for them by weight. There are a lot of things in China we just buy by weight where as in America we have to buy them by count. Other such examples include Watermelons, or Cantaloupes. Eggs especially surprised me because sometimes you just need one or two eggs for a few days, and a dozen might seem like too much. I know that some super markets and grocery stores have started offering eggs in six to a package, but it still just isn't the same. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Donate: http://bit.ly/Wg4FzD Website: http://bit.ly/Wg4F2N 5 Minute Chinese : S08E07 http://bit.ly/1qNQoHe

Chinese Culture - The Price of Bargaining

What is the price of Bargaining in China? In today's culture examination we're going to give a brief overview of bargaining in China. When do bargain and when not to? When you are in a small independent stores in China, then bargaining with them should be a priority. For local Chinese, and especially for foreigners then vendors will increase the prices of their wares by 5 times or more, and if you are good as bargaining you can easily bring it down quite a lot. So take this to heart when you visit China. When do you *not* bargain in China? Don't bargain when you are in grocery stores, or shopping malls, or places like Wal*Mart, etc. They have a set price, and there is no haggling, or bargaining there. This holds true for even State owned gift shops in China, especially at major Tourist Attractions like "Summer Palace" or "Forbidden City". --------------------------------------- Donate: http://bit.ly/Wg4FzD Website: http://bit.ly/Wg4F2N 5 Minute Chinese : S08E03 http://bit.ly/1lQNzVD
