Chinese Culture What does it mean to get older

What does it mean to get older? Between American Culture and Chinese Culture the perception of what it means to grow older is very different as I learned last week. In China, getting older means you have acquired more experience, and you have a more respected position among society. In America, I've noticed, more people don't want to think of them selves as old, or getting older. A strong desire to remain youthful. In China you can see it in the words we use for how much we respect getting older. Words like "Teacher" - Lǎoshī - Lǎo/老 means "Old", and anywhere you see Lǎo used you know it'll likely be in reference to someone in a position of high authority, or experience. What does getting older mean in your society?
