What does it mean to get older? Between American Culture and Chinese Culture the perception of what it means to grow older is very different as I learned last week. In China, getting older means you have acquired more experience, and you have a more respected position among society. In America, I've noticed, more people don't want to think of them selves as old, or getting older. A strong desire to remain youthful. In China you can see it in the words we use for how much we respect getting older. Words like "Teacher" - Lǎoshī - Lǎo/老 means "Old", and anywhere you see Lǎo used you know it'll likely be in reference to someone in a position of high authority, or experience.
